Feedback from students

I've read feedback from students on things that were difficult or what came easy in school. Many difficulties were staying unmotivated, bad time management, and internet problems. Trying to stay motivated is a hard skill when wanting to complete work at home. The environment in a student’s house may not be the best option for learning space. Especially within internet problems. The internet can disconnect at given moments when work and turning in assignments.

The learning environment for students on the computers can be uncomfortable. There is no space to work or loud noises in the background. On the computers, the volume may not be loud enough for a student to grasp information. Nowadays, teachers expect a student to speak up about it. The communication between a student and teacher has become doubtful.

Trying to wake up to school is a downfall. When this happens, students are losing their focus and motivation. They start to pressure themselves into completing the assignments at the last minute. Exhaustion is an issue because the process repeats, opening and closing laptops. The reruns of classes and sitting in the same spot for more than an hour is tiring. It's called burnout. Burnouts consist of emptiness and mental exhaustion that keeps them unmotivated. People that experience this won’t see a positive change in this situation.

What came easy for students were completing assignments and turning them in one time. It was difficult for students to finish assignments at home, but the due dates extended. Getting to class on time was easy. Most of the students commenting about how this was a process to adjust to and they’ve been okay so far.

How online learning affects student health?

Virtual learning has made students spend more time on their devices. Technology can become all-consuming which can harm sleep. This can lead to irregular sleeping patterns that can affect the body’s internal clock.

“Light exposure in the a.m. helps us wake up, and decreasing light exposure in the evening helps you fall asleep through nocturnal melatonin induction,” she said. “Exposure to light in the evening, especially blue light from our computer screens may suppress nocturnal melatonin secretion and alter circadian rhythms.”

→ Jennifer Katzenstein, director of psychology and neuropsychology at the Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, has observed the impact of remote learning on children of all ages.

Increased screen time can distract students from learning. Yet, online classrooms last more than an hour. Then there are many classes in the day and assignments to complete after school. This contributes to technology issues and students can’t finish work until later at night. Then they have to pull all-nighters to finish the rest of the work.

What are some ways to kill a student’s Motivation?

There are two types of motivation, extrinsic and intrinsic. Depending on a student’s lack of motivation it relates to one of these, extrinsic. When the teacher tells a student to "complete this assignment by this certain day, you’ll receive a good grade." Students depend on their grades to pass the school year, but are they doing it for the work? Or doing it for the reward?

For a student to have motivation the environment in the classroom should be learning itself rather than getting a grade. “Learning is a messy process that takes time, and failure is inevitable. If we want to motivate our students, we need to place more emphasis on the process of learning rather than the result.” (Mason,2019). Schools rather focus on the product more than the process. When students get feedback on work, they pay attention to the grade which leads them to overthink.

When receiving a lower grade can make a student feel like a failure. This is a topic that can go towards the schooling system. Teachers need to conversate with students about motivation during school learning. They can get to know their students better as a whole. For that to happen young students need to speak up and or teachers to recognize the problem and speak to them.

How to build momentum?

To build momentum in time management is important for every student to stay on top of their tasks. Time management is a great way to organize your plan to divide time throughout the day. Time management is to work smarter not harder. To achieve this skill, you need to work on scheduling. There are other things to do outside schools such as a job or sports. Using time management you can cure your day.

Organization is another skill that can help structure tasks. It can involve cleaned spaces and an agenda to boost productivity and rank work in the day. Time management and organization have a common ground. They come together when scheduling daily tasks.

Staying goal-oriented is very important to surpass these two important skills. Goals are set to motivate a student. Being goal-oriented is focusing to reach a specific goal with a plan. To improve a math assignment, set a goal to self-practice your work and go to office hours to get help. Take your time with small steps to stay motivated.

What are some ways to stay motivated?

To stay motivated, make a to-do list, exercise, ask for help, and learn more about yourself. Organization and time management skills you want to cover as a student. It helps you to stay goal-oriented. Learning more about yourself can help you with what you need to improve more at. Remember that your decisions are valuable. It will take small steps to figure out solutions to stay on track.

During this quarantine experience, it was difficult to follow online learning. Everyone is the worry about the presidential elections and covid-spreading. Currently was the time to observe and understand our surroundings. Moreover, we focused on ourselves in the schooling environment. There many ways to discuss how it might’ve been terrible or it was easy, but what have you learned about yourself? What are some ways to prevent from having a difficult school year? To answer such questions, the process of motivation has to start with you.
